A death in an Orinda neighborhood following an incident between two vehicles prompted a large police presence Thursday afternoon.
Contra Costa Sheriff’s Deputies announced around 12:30 p.m. that they are investigating a homicide in Orinda. The Orinda Police Department confirmed that police activity was taking place near St. Stephens Drive and Las Vegas Road.
Video from chopper over the scene showed an incident involving a Toyota 4Runner SUV and Tesla in the area of Las Vegas Court and Las Vegas Road. A body covered by a tarp was also spotted near the vehicles.
According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called to the area shortly after 11 a.m. and found the victim. First responders immediately took life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victim’s name has not been released.
Neighbors told CBS News Bay Area that they reported hearing what sounded like gunshots.
“I heard a loud bang. First thing I thought about, just because a lot of this is going on in our society, that it was a gun. And I thought no way, not here, probably a tire that blew,” said Shawn James, who lives nearby.
Sabena Nezar, another neighbor, said, “It’s very sad. It’s shocking. But I guess it’s the world we live in now. it surprises me because it happened right here just because maybe I live here.”
Police detained a person for further investigation. The person’s name has not been released, but police said that both parties involved were Orinda residents.
“There was a rare and unfortunate homicide in Orinda today,” city officials said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to those involved in this tragic incident.”
In an update Thursday afternoon, police said the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no further risk to the public. The investigation is ongoing.
